Farm Description:

Wise Acres Farm grows 2+ acres of certified organic vegetables and berries for local farmers’ markets and a CSA program. We have been farming on this land since 2012, after apprenticing and working on other area farms for three years. We count on our employees to help us care for our land, operate a financially sustainable business and provide our community with fresh, local, yummy produce.

Assistant Farmer Job Description:

We seek an assistant farmer to take on manager-level responsibility as we expand our marketing and fine-tune production in 2019. This position offers an individual with enthusiasm for organic farming and demonstrated performance as a farm worker or manager an opportunity to deepen and diversify her/his farming skills.

Working closely with the principal farmer, the assistant farmer will lead and work alongside fellow employees to plant, cultivate, harvest, wash and pack our crops, encouraging the team to meet the highest standards of quality and efficiency. S/he will take a lead role in keeping accurate digital records for farm planning and organic certification.

In 2019, the assistant farmer will also have the opportunity to take part in several infrastructure projects, including building and outfitting a seedling greenhouse, completing and re-covering high tunnels, moving caterpillar tunnels, and making packing shed improvements.

Based on interest and aptitude, s/he will also receive training and manage projects in some of the following areas:

  • Greenhouse seeding

  • CSA management

  • Farmers’ markets

  • Irrigation (drip and sprinkler)

  • Tractor tillage and cultivation

  • Cover crop and nutrient management

  • Pest and disease management

  • Equipment maintenance

Expectations:

  • At least one full season of experience working on a produce farm (multiple seasons preferred)

  • A demonstrated interest in farming as a career

  • A positive attitude and a sense of humor and purpose

  • Attention to detail, efficiency and ongoing improvement while performing repetitive tasks

  • Willingness to take both direction and initiative

  • Proactive, honest and constructive communication about work-related information and personal needs

  • Ability to do strenuous work outside in all weather conditions and dress in appropriate work clothing

  • Ability to lift and walk a short distance with 50 lbs

  • Reliability and punctuality

  • A valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, and reliable transportation

  • Availability to work full-time from at least May through October

Schedule:

This position is full-time (40+ hours) from the beginning of May through the end of October, with the potential option for additional work in March/April and November. Hours are Monday 1-5 PM (usually a solo shift for more specialized tasks) and Tuesday-Friday 7 AM-5 PM. All team members take an unpaid hour-long lunch break on full days.

From July through frost (usually mid-to-late September), the position requires an additional 4-hour harvest shift on Saturdays (starting time and rotating Saturdays off to be coordinated with fellow employees).

Compensation:

The base wage for this position is $12/hour and increases based on experience, within the farm’s budget. We do not offer housing or meals, but this position includes a CSA share and access to our surplus organic produce. We are located 20 minutes northwest of Bangor in a beautiful, peaceful spot.
